I was sick for the last class and missed the discussion of what a ‘foil” is. Could anyone fill me in?
Abrams in A Glossary of Literary Terms (8th): “A character in a work who, by sharp contrast, serves to stress and highlight the distinctive temperament of the protagonist is termed a foil” (234).
